The Ministry of Agriculture , Akwa Ibom State , yesterday, Tuesday, at the open field of the Ministry of Agriculture, inaugurated the Chapter Coordinators and Secretaries of the National Women in Agriculture Multipurpose Coperative Society (WIA).
In her address, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Glory Edet thanked God for the grace to host the event and the ability given to women to be involved in Agriculture. She commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for prioritising Agriculture and making it a cardinal point in his administration, describing him as “the number one farmer” in the State.
Dr. Edet took time to reel out some key achievements in the Agriculture Sector to include distribution interest free loans, farm inputs and seedlings to Vegetable, Cassava, Rice and Onion farmers. She noted that only mischief makers would discredit Governor Udom’s achievements in Agriculture as he has also been distributing farm inputs to farmers to further encourage them. She prayed God to bless the Governor and grant him more grace to do more.
She appreciated the mushroom trainers for a job well done and encouraged the trainees to be committed in the production and cultivation of Mushroom. She encouraged women in Agriculture to be steadfast and take advantage of the first farming season starting from March while charging them to consider developing farms strictly for the group.
She gave the women onion seeds will to further encourage onion farming and charged the women to invest more in cultivating cassava to further boost food sufficiency in the State. She encouraged other farmers in rural areas to invest in agriculture as a business and assured the Women of the Ministry’s continuous partnership with their group. She further assured mushroom trainers of the Ministry’s partnership with them and promised to involve the groups in more Agriculture activities.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Chairman of the Women in Agriculture, Mrs. Precious Edet appreciated God for making the event possible. She appreciated the Commissioner for hosting the group and honouring the inauguration and assured the Ministry of their readiness to promote agriculture .
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Mary Ukoette Bassey
appreciated women for participating in Agriculture , noting that their roles in national emancipation cannot be over emphasized. She encouraged the women to extend their tentacles to the nooks and crannies of the hinterland to further strengthen the local farmers. She seized the opportunity to appreciate the mushroom farmers for their ingenuity and proactiveness while lauding the Governor for investing in the cultivation of Onions. She reserved special commendations for the Honourable Commissioner for passionately interpreting the vision of the Governor in the Agric sector.
Major highlights of the event was the inauguration of Chapter officers and Secretaries of National Women in Agriculture, by Barr. Mrs Akpabio, Presentation of Onion Seedlings and Okro Seedlings to farmers, presentation of Certificates to Mushroom Trainees and presentation of take-off grant to trainees.
Mrs Glory Ekanem, a Mushroom Farm Trainer gave an overview of Mushroom, the Economic value, Health benefits, Nutritional value, Preservation and challenges of cultivating mushroom.
A representative of the group in her response appreciated the Hon Commissioner for the time spent with the Women in Agriculture and the support given to the group. She appreciated participants that attended the event.
Speaking on behalf of the representives of mushroom trainees. Mr. Idongesit Emmanuel appreciated the Hon Commissioner for the opportunity given them to be trained on mushroom cultivation. He appealed to the Hon. Commissioner to encourage more people to be trained in cultivating Mushroom.
Delivering a vote of thanks, Director of Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Akpan
glorified God for the ability to host the event. He appreciated the Governor for always encouraging farmers while lauding the Honourable Commissioner for translating the vision of the Governor in the Agric sector and for moving the Ministry of Agriculture forward.
Afterwards, a portrait was presented to the Honourable Commissioner by the President of WIA, Mrs Precious Edet.
